It has been busy the last few days at Village Maternity!

Yes, we keep a few extra bellies around to help both our customers and ourselves envision how the clothes will look later in pregnancy. You can always tell when someone puts the belly on--usually by the peals of laughter and the words, "There is no way I am EVER going to get this big!" echoing around the store.

Countdown to Mother's Day

Here's a question for you: Should moms receive Mother's Day gifts from husbands as well as children?

One proud papa recently challenged me with this particularly effective point: His wife is not his mother, so shouldn't the celebrating be done by children only? In theory, it's a toughie. Logically speaking, Mother's Day probably should be celebrated exclusively by angelic, gift-giving kids. But that's too square for my taste! I say gifts from Dad too are the way to go. In my family, Mother's Day has traditionally been a celebration of both my mother and our entire family. As my father lovingly explained, it takes two to make a family, so I think it should take two to celebrate one too (besides, Pops, who would pick the better gift--you or the three-year-old?) A gift says that you're thinking of her and appreciating all the wonderful things about every Mom, not just your own. Sometimes instead of a physical gift, your acknowledgement of her love, devotion and hard work through flowers, a spa treatment or even a simple date is the best gift of all. A little empathy goes a long way (see the upcoming photo of our good friend Franklin if you need inspiration or a good chuckle.) Showing Mom how much you care is worth the legwork of finding a good gift, and I'm sure she'll appreciate a grown-up present along with the macaroni necklace. Besides, it's an even trade--don't forget that Father's Day is in June!

The Jeans Have Arrived!

Well, I was worried. You see, we were really starting to run low on our jeans...now who can live without their favorite pair of jeans, especially when they are pregnant?

We are now fully restocked in your favorite styles from Citizens of Humanity, Paige Premium Denim, the new chic MamaJ from JBrand, and some of our tried and true favorites from our maternity lines.

There are days when I like to dress up...and then there are days when I look at my jeans and think, "Yep...that's just what I need to wear today." For me, jeans mean I can comfortably go through my day, from work, to playing with the kids, to going out to dinner.

The best part of maternity clothes today? The choices. You can get a bootcut, a skinny jean, a dark wash, a light wash, a crop jean. And believe me, if you saw what I wore when I was pregnant, you'd understand my appreciation.

How Village Maternity was Born

I was pregnant back in 1982 with my first child, but unlike many other store owners who said they couldn’t find fashionable maternity clothing, I had the opposite experience. We had a wonderful Lady Madonna store conveniently located in Bellevue Square. Lady Madonna was the first franchised maternity boutique in the United States, that offered fashionable clothing and everything else for moms to be and their babies. I felt so lucky to have such a wonderful place to shop. Unfortunately, it was taken over by a lower priced chain store, which served a purpose, but did not offer the same fashion and nurturing feeling as Lady Madonna. So, 26 years ago, my best friend and I, not wanting to lose such a special place, decided to open up a Lady Madonna store in, up and coming, University Village.

While the franchisor eventually went out of business, we continued to search for the best maternity clothing available, the most adorable baby clothes, promoted breastfeeding and all the gear to make the transition easier; and selected the newest, safest, and most fun products for mom to be and baby. We were so known for our location, we finally decided to change our name from Lady Madonna to Village Maternity.

Through the years, we’ve remodeled 4 times, the last in October, 2009, and my partner moved on to be a grandmother in Annapolis, MD., but our mission is still the same. We are passionate about giving our customers what they want. And, we hope it shows.

We have watched babies grow up to have their own children, and appreciate all our new customers just as much. Thanks to all of you for spreading the word. We are so grateful to you. We look forward to meeting many more generations.

They are Back and Blogging....

So yes...I admit it. I have been a bad, bad blogger. But, I promise you this...I am back. I will keep you posted as to what we are carrying, and I have friends and colleagues that are going to help me. For those of you who don't know me, I've included a picture this time. Taken last summer on a surf trip down in Oregon, this is myself (Kat) and my then six-year old daughter Nel.

For all of you parents out there concerned about BPA in your bottles, we have just received a shipment of ThinkBaby Bottles. Sold in 5oz or 9oz two-packs, with eco-friendly packaging to boot, these durable plastic bottles are also free of Phthalates and PVC.

In addition to BPA-Free bottles, our efforts toward safe and socially responsible products has introduced several fabulous new toy lines to our store. Yellow Label Kids, working out of San Francisco, has created a delicious collection of fair trade toys and rattles... for the healthy-minded, an assortment of crocheted fruit and veggie rattles, and donuts and ice cream cones for those feeling a little more sinful. We are always being asked for a little something for a mom-to-be or a new mom, so I just have to tell you about our new favorite.

Yes, it’s Nail Polish.

Ok, it’s not really nail polish, it’s nail lacquer, and not at all like the stuff you’ve been putting on your nails for years. Welcome to the new world of butter LONDON.

This nail lacquer is non-toxic, or as the company calls it, 3 Free (read: safe to use during pregnancy).

It comes in the most sophisticated and fun colors imaginable (you must check out the color descriptions on their site!).

Even better for me, it is safe to use for both myself AND my daughter (who likes to follow mom’s lead in regard to toenail painting).

My friends tell me that I drop in and out of sight, sound, and hearing for long periods of time, but that they can always count on me to show up again eventually. That probably holds true for our faithful blog as well....

I have long had a weakness for Tea Collection and for those of you out there like me, I wanted to let you know that we have a few wonderful things that recently arrived.

Yes, you guessed it, the Daily Tea has arrived! So why do we love it? The ability to make multiple outfits out of a couple of pieces, the sophisticated color palette, the fun prints, and the high quality. So for now, come in and check it out...for spring and summer 2008, we have our Daily Tea up to 24months. Coming this fall, however, look for it in toddler also.

Come and See What's New.....

I don't know about you, but we are looking forward to the last days of summer here in Seattle. The weather is (mostly) sunny, the temperature is perfect, the kids are starting school...get out and play! It is a lovely time to shop in the UVillage, and while you are shopping, drop in to see the deals we have on what's left of our summer inventory. This is also the time of the year that we get some great new pieces. We are happy to announce the arrival of our Fall shipment of Boob (a fabulous maternity and nursing line out of Sweden). Perfect for Fall and Winter.

Notice maternity wear, Skip Hop

New in the store this week are dresses from Notice. You may have seen Notice at stores like Anthropologie, and now they also do maternity clothes! Stop in and check them out, and we will post photos soon.
We also now have bags, and accessories from Skip Hop, including the awesome Pronto Diaper Bag. This little bag is great for short trips. Not only does it fold out into a change pad, but it also has space for wipes, a few diapers, and one or two key items for Mom(keys, snack,etc.)!

Sorry for the lack of updates, it has been busy for us here the past few weeks!
We are continuing to get some great new spring items in, like this adorable cotton dress from Duet Designs:

We have also received a fresh shipment of Glamourmom tanks in the long style. We have an assortment of sizes in black, brown, olive and navy, so make sure to stop in and pick one up.

For those of you searching for that perfect baby gift, we now have some fantastic gift sets from Loralin Designs. Each gift set comes with an adorable handmade tee, a Jelly Cat stuffed animal, an a baby journal. We also have gift sets for twins (girl/girl, boy/boy, and girl/boy)!
